Matthew Werley's research encompasses a wide variety of interdisciplinary subjects. 

Topics include institutional histories of the Salzburg Festival, International Society for Contemporary Music, and Women's peace organisations, as well as opera and global festival studies, aesthetics, performance, and cultural diplomacy.

He has also focused on composers such as C.W. Gluck, Gustav Mahler, W.A. Mozart, Richard Strauss, Igor Stravinsky, Richard Wagner, and several others. In addition, he has interests in reception issues, performers, and Austrian literature.

Matthew is a leading expert on Stefan Zweig and his musical world.
